Coral reefs are at risk because of climate change. Zooxanthellae are a symbiotic algae present in large numbers in the cytoplasm of many marine invertebrates including corals. Zooxanthellae provides the corals with food, and in return the corals protect them. Additionally, zooxanthellae give corals their bright color. If ocean water becomes too warm, the zooxanthellae can die or leave the corals causing them to be white or bleached.
