IS NUCLEAR ENERGY CLEAN?

Yes and no! We have talked about dirty energy in past Hawk Mags. In my last interview with the physicist Michael Wehrstedt we have learned that burning coal is the dirtiest way of creating energy because it releases large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) and dirty air into the atmosphere. We know that wind and solar power is clean energy.

In my research I found out that nuclear energy is an old way of generating energy. You can make nuclear energy by splitting an atom in half which is called ‘nuclear fission’: In a nuclear reactor small amounts of uranium are split in half and create a lot of heat. That heat presurizes steam or water which makes turbines spin. This creates energy. Nuclear energy has to be controlled if it is not it can cause reactors to melt and overheat.
